Hung Gar Kung Fu Classes
Hung Gar is a high-intensity "power" discipline at its root. This is why it offers an excellent starting point for real martial arts and self-defense training. Stance training is extremely important to develop strong leg muscles, maximize stability and expand mental discipline. A sound structure and position advantage is the humble start and end of our style. This training will be highly emphasized throughout so students can learn from a firm and proper foundation going forward.
Moving stances, leg and foot work, bone, muscle and tendon conditioning; flexibility, iron body training, punching and kicking warm-up drills, blocking, strikes, bag work- are all fundamental to basic to advanced conditioning and application of Hung Gar techniques. We work hard to discipline students in loosening-up drills, speed work, agility and so on; gradually developing more and more internal power as well.
Hand and weapons forms are taught with progression from beginning to advanced levels. Many new skills are introduced between phases to include: strength, balance, speed, breathing, spacing/distancing with one's opponent, precision attacks and energy release. Along with heavy emphasis of modern real-world self-defense, traditional aspects of Hung Gar are deeply explored, including: the Four Pillar Hand Forms, the Twelve Bridges theory and application, kiu sao (bridge hand drills), da sam sing, iron body, choke holds, locks, take-downs, high kicks, sweeps, sticky hands, wooden dummy, heavy bag, wall bag, listening/ reading your opponent, breathing and intention. If Hung Gar Program is entirely based on Shaolin fundamentals and more general- Chinese Martial Arts, then this should in no way limit one’s growth or mold any biased or fixed perspectives of fighting. Combat psychology, weapons disarming, ground fighting, center line theory, line work and survivalist mentality are the main objective of all true martial artists. This is the epicenter of Hung Gar at our school.
