Tai Chi as a Martial Art Classes
Tai Chi as a Martial Art emphasizes the softer side of self-defense; stylizing the calm and gentle movements in combat. Traditional Yang Tai Chi is an internal, low intensity, martial art that focuses on primarily on redirecting and manipulating the opponent's energy and taking advantage of their position. Students lead the body by the mind's intent. Mental training takes precedence over the physical. Water is favored as the element of study. The movements are meant to be fluid. The opposites, or Yin/Yang, relating to self-defense, are explored: forward and backward, high and low, right and left, fast and slow, hard and soft.
Particular emphasis is placed on the old 108 long frame and its techniques and proper positions. Tui shou (push hands) and other two person exercises, self-defense applications, weapons training and forms are all studied in this class.
The course also explores the concept and philosophy of "Qi" as well as the practice of qigong rooted within traditional tai chi chuan. Qi is the ancient Chinese concept of the breath of life, natural subtle energy or vital energy. The concept of circulating qi in the body by means of breathing, visualizations and postures can also be found in the concept of acupuncture and other ancient Chinese traditions.
